Adelaide Afrobeat Collective

At its essence, the collective draws inspiration from the Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and the vibrant dance rhythms found in his Nigerian venue, Afrika Shrine.   The diverse combination of West African percussion, tribal singing, and funk contributes to the global allure of Afrobeat. This innovative musical form evolved into a powerful sound that embodies themes of empowerment, liberation, and worldwide consciousness.

Tare Raine, the lead vocalist of the Adelaide Afrobeat Collective and originally from Nigeria, perceives Afrobeat as a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and musical interchange. His vocal timbre has evolved, showcasing a refined and captivating quality, while his phrasing is both expressive and fluid, allowing him to navigate the song's melodic nuances with profound emotional intensity.

The band radiates charisma and an infectious spirit. Matt Bailey delivers a powerful bass line, leading a talented group of young musicians from Adelaide, where music transcends mere sound, evoking movement and a sense of journey. The band's direction is a collaborative endeavor, with sound serving as a map rather than a defined space. Kallan Francis, with his intense guitar work, possesses a distinctive sound; his ideas resonate deeply, and beauty permeates the intricate layers of his music.

The dynamic drummer Alex Flood propels the ensemble forward with his refined and assertive Afrobeat rhythms, while the passionate conga player Adam Carroll contributes a diverse array of percussive textures, guiding the audience through a reflective and exploratory musical experience. The bold brass section, featuring Jordan Noble (Tenor Sax/Flute), Jackson Faulkner (Trumpet), Ena Faulks (Baritone Sax), and Jake Goss (Alto Sax), injects excitement with their vibrant lines, showcasing a level of artistry and skill that promises the band's longevity. Aidan McDonough on keys playfully cues the various elements of this ensemble, illustrating how African music is re-establishing its connection with jazz, its ancestral counterpart, and unveiling a pathway to the future of jazz.

The compositions are intricately arranged to enhance both drama and lyricism, frequently employing techniques such as repetition, variations in timbre, and dynamic subtleties to highlight and contextualize the contributions of individual musicians. While some pieces may appear to echo familiar themes, the band's profound musical comprehension of these elements is remarkably sophisticated. Consequently, when they build towards a powerful climax, it is a deliberate and intentional endeavor. Each song represents a stunning exploration of a rich heritage, so intricate that it suggests the beginning of an extensive series of recordings by a group ideally suited to navigate these complexities. Most importantly, the overall sound is exceptionally pleasing.  For an evening filled with vibrant contemporary Afrobeat energy, be sure to attend the collective's upcoming performance!
